Guadalupe Center of Immokalee: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Through Education

HOLIDAY AND SUMMER PROGRAMS

Providing educational opportunities over the three month summer vacation and the winter and spring break periods is critically important to the academic success of the children of Immokalee.

In 2004 the Summer Tutoring and Recreation Program (S.T.A.R.) began with 175 students and grows each year. The S.T.A.R. Program combines academics with recreation for a summer experience that is fun and educational. Students are pre and posts tested in language, arts, and mathematics and see an average of a 4–8% increase in scores between the two tests.

The holiday programs utilize the same format as the summer program combining both academics and recreation for students while school is not in session.
